Prince William delighted a royal fan today as he arrived in Cape Town for a four-day visit to South Africa.

He travelled alone, with Princess Katherine at home looking after their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. After photos from his first engagements were released, fans were quick to notice his big smile, commenting on how happy he looked in South Africa. The prince began his visit by meeting young environmentalists taking part in the first Earthshot Youth Climate Leadership Programme, expressing his belief that they would change the world. Observers also took note of his more casual attire, wearing a sustainable shirt paired with a jacket and trousers.

While he incorporated some formal elements into his outfit, the Prince of Wales still took part in a rugby match with the children present at the event. People were quick to point out the distinctive brand of his shirt, made by Aola, as the 42-year-old appeared to opt for a sweater and shirt instead of his traditional suit and tie. The subtle sartorial adjustment could signal his growing confidence and comfort in his role, possibly reflecting a shift in priorities around his family responsibilities, including the recent illnesses that have affected his wife and father.

William has become increasingly comfortable and open in public, suggesting a growing sense of trust over time. One fan described the royal as charming as he interacted with teenagers and coaches. Another commented on the appeal of the shirt, describing it as a Christmas present for their husband. Much of the scrutiny William faces comes from his immediate family, but he may be starting to appreciate the strong support and affection he receives from the public. His children are reaching an age where they can happily comment on his clothing choices, potentially influencing his style as he spends more time with them.

What's more, with all the family interactions, William may be settling into a more casual style, moving away from the jacket and tie. A source has suggested that this change in his attire may coincide with his growing status within the royal family. As such, his recent outings have shown that he feels more in control of his royal duties than when he previously relied on the guidance of his grandmother and father. After engaging with young environmentalists in Cape Town, the Prince of Wales took part in a rugby match with underprivileged youngsters. During the match, the future king was humorously challenged by the youngsters when they challenged a group to a rugby touch-up near Cape Town.

He was joined by former Springbok legends Joël Stransky and Tendai Mtawarira, nicknamed “The Beast”, who joked about their previous encounter with William, noting how excited he was. Comments included enthusiasm at seeing William enjoy and be excited throughout the match. William actively sought to get on the ball, teaming up with “The Beast” as they tried to outplay the younger players. At one point, the two teenagers playfully stopped him, causing him to laugh hysterically. At another moment, “The Beast” pretended to run backwards, helping the prince score an unopposed try. In a heartfelt message before the ceremony, he reflected on the solace he found in Africa following the tragic passing of his mother, Princess Diana, and recounted the joy he felt when proposing to his wife while on holiday in Kenya in 2010.
